INDUSTRIAL DESIGN STUDENT

As mentioned in my Professional Identity, I’ve always been interested in technology and creating. Before studying Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology, I worked on several personal design projects. These projects were centered around craftsmanship.

In 2022 I made a surfboard using more sustainable materials. Before the start of this project, I did not have knowledge or skills around making surfboards. So, I did research into the materials that are used to make an ordinary surfboard. Once I had a list of materials, I did research into their environmental impact and searched for more sustainable alternatives. Eventually I made the base of the surfboard from a cardboard structure and used flax cloth (impregnated with epoxy) to make the board waterproof. This project forced me to learn by doing, it introduced me to this way of learning.

As an Industrial Designer your work is often multi-disciplinary, which means that during some projects there are areas that are new to you. The ability to learn by/while doing is crucial when working on these kinds of projects.

In 2023 I worked on a series of minimalistic concrete furniture pieces. Where I focussed on constructing simple shapes using concrete.

During these projects my interest for materials started. I like to see what the possibilities with different materials are. What are the boundaries of a certain material? How to optimize the characteristics of a material (strength, flexibility, etc).
